Should I be performing any other tests regularly on my 5 gallon? I have a divided 5 gallon tank with two Bettas in it. Today I just did my second ammonia test on it, and it came up very good. Are there any other tests I need, or is the ammonia enough? (By the way, I smashed the glass vial the first time I used it, where can I get another one?) The tank has been running for almost 2 months I think. Is your tank already cycled? If ammonia turns out at 0 it could mean it is, but if you still have nitrites then it's not cycled. You need to test these main tests: Ammonia (obviously) Nitrite, Nitrate and PH Test for nitrite second, and if it shows up as 0 test for nitrate afterwards. If you still have nitrite, then your tank is not cycled and you should continue to test for nitrite until it drops to 0. If you have 0 nitrite, but some nitrate, your tank is cycled! When you test for nitrate, it should be identifiable, but make sure it stays under 40 (20 preferably) before you need to make a water change. Each time the nitrate gets high, do water changes. It's always good to test for PH to make sure you know what kind of fish should go in your tank. Some fish like water with low acidic ph (under 7), some fish like it neutral (7), and some fish like it with alkaline ph (over 7). If the ph that you have isn't ideal for the fish you have right now, then don't worry about changing it too much -- the fish will be used to tose ph levels eventually, and stable ph is more important than the "ultimate" ph.
